This panel should primarily focus on the principal differences between the undergoing German energy transition based on renewables and improved energy efficiency (Energiewende) and the Czech government’s path to becoming a nuclear island in the heart of Europe and the consequenses of both concepts for energy policy on the EU level. Which of these visions can prove to be economically and environmentally viable for a sustainable future? And are there any one-size-fits-all solutions? Further, the debate should touch upon the topic of possible EU coordination of member states’ energy policies, the present available mechanisms and the obstacles to creating a common European energy policy. Finally, the continuation of the 20-20-20 EU climate and energy package should be discussed.
